How to run a successful mission in City of Villains.

What will be covered?

What you will need as a leader?
What you will need as a healer?
Difference between Heist and Regular missions?
Difference on Strike forces?
Know your role!
Help your healers out.

What you will need as a leader?

This seems very straightforward to most people. A team would be and most the time the answer you will get but that is not all you need. First as a leader you need to ask your self what kind of missions will my team be running? How many people do I want to invite? If it is a Strike Force make sure that everyone is of the appropriate level? If hunting yard trash make sure the lure knows where the pull point and choke points are? If doing a strike force make sure everyone has inspirations and sold all the enhancements before starting it. Have someone you know or a friend help supply inspirations during a strike force. If a wipe or rez is down make sure everyone knows whether to go to the hospital vs. going to base or vice versa.

Some careful planning by the leader will create a team that is efficient and coordinated. Another important thing to determine as a leader is who the person is who will call for an evac. Evac is an old EQ term for retreat a caster would cast and the group gets swept away. In COV we don’t not have that kind of power set. SO evac is a fall back point so not to have the whole party end up as a wipe out.

What you will need as a healer?

Much like a leader if you ask most healing classes in City of Villains they will tell you to heal. Healing is a small part of a healer’s job. A healer needs to be one of the most vocal members in a party besides the leader. The reason for this only a healer can say when they are ready. A healer who is not ready could mean a party wipe or worse the group with an angry tank (brute or stalker) or a very angry healer. As a rule my inspiration load out as a healer at level 25 is the following 10 blue inspirations 2 yellows and an awaken. Then I get a break free and an awaken for the main tank. The reason is if I am loe (low on endo) I don’t want the tank to suffer. Break free’s are important if yo0u cannot buff the tank.

My load out allows me to also help as crowd control another good skill to practice as a healer. It allows others a safety net so that endo does not become an hindrance but a tool.

Difference between Heist and Regular missions?
So it is time to do some paper missions to gain a rep with local crime bosses and contacts. You have your standard destroy all x or get x missions they are fun but not the only kind. With City of Villains we are introduced to the Heist mission. A heist mission in my eyes is organized chaos till you learn the patterns. Much like a strike force healers take care of your tanks. Heist has a first room usually a min of 4 mobs to as high as 20 in the first room. As soon as you walk in there is a perfect choke point. As with most missions placement is key. Have a dark place a tar right at the door. Corruptor that is acting like a blaster in the middle back to the wall. Pets on the right sides of the door acting as a wedge. Tank in the middle front. Aim fire shoot. Mobs come in tank engages corruptor acts as healer pets act as crowd control, Bam first room clear.

Now we go to the corridors. Crowd control is a must tar fears and stuns the adds. Keep an eye out for the tanks.

Then the vault room. Hehe my favorite. Clear the room first. Set the pets on either side of the door. Tank in the middle corruptors in the rear. One corruptor taps the vault. (Hits it once or twice). The first waves comes running from the begging of the zone. Be prepared to drop a heal because usually 1 to 2 bosses 3-5 lueis and 7-10 officers will come rushing in. Drop slows fears and knock backs. Rinse and repeat all steps. For 3 waves. This is where the leader should say either get the click or exit the mission.

Difference on Strike forces?
Strike forces are great experience and great risk. Usually involves a hero or elite boss of some sort. Things to remember on a strike force.

1. Must have 4 people
2. You cannot buy inspirations during one
3. You can not invite more team members once you begin
4. Usually involve about 45-3 hours worth of game time
5. Rewards are good and money is decent
6. Between missions allow time to sell and level

Know your role!

So what is a role in COV? Well you have healers, lures, and crowd control, damage dealers main tank and off tank and have course the leader.

1. Healers – do some crowd control, they tend to have to watch agro a lot more closely than others
2. Lure – not always the tank, used to bring a mob or a group or mobs back to a predestinated spot. Usually will need to run past the group to clear agro before rejoining the fight.
3. Crowd controllers à Dominators, corruptors and others try to force the crowd to the will of the group. They are constantly switching targets to prevent a waste of endo. They also help the tanks cool down so they can regain endo so they are not out and their toggles don’t drop.
4. Damage Dealers – long or short range damage. Not a tank or off tank so agro control is important not to make yourself higher then the tanks agro list.
5. Main tank – in charge of control the pace of the battle. Should have taunt or a taunt like ability to keep agro on them. Usually the tank will be the Stalker or Brute with the most damage resistance. Will work to control agro with the off tank.
6. Off tank – the tank that will bounce agro from the main to himself and back again. This helps so that neither looses all the agro also helps to initiate chain pulling.
7. Leader – can be all the above plus needs to control the group him/her self. Responsible that everyone knows what they are supposed to do whether it is street, missions or Task forces

Help your healers out.

Finally the key to all successful hunting regardless of the game you play the healer. Healers generate more agro regardless of the game then most classes. Immediately they are the most hated and blamed by players for a failure. In part I believe this to be true. Healers must with out exception control agro period. Because if you don’t you die as well as the group, As the healer you control the pace of the pulls. So how do I help the healer out? Help them keep their endo up a healer with no endo is worthless. Give a blue call a bio break whatever control the pace is what comes down and that will help your healer out. Unlike other games there is no player loot slash cash form the corpses so they don’t get shafted there it is only time and endo.

Closing

Hopefully these tips and tricks along with some basic guides should help your leveling and more importantly fun in game. I follow these to a T and when in a group these guidelines will equal the most experience except power leveling.

This guide was written with love and care. There is several game specific versions that I wrote as well as others I didn’t.

Healers?

We don't have healers in CoV, man.
Don't you dare say corruptors, either.

Hm?  V3RTIGOX on 09/20/06 18:29

Well the Thermal Corruptor is really good at healing and so is dark miasma and some other secondaries in corruptors, so why not corrs?
