The Respecification (Respec) Trial in City of Villains is very unique and enjoyable. In order to accomplish it certain strategies must be incorporated to the team play to finish it. The first thing you need to do is form a team of at least four players that are level 24 or higher (the team can accommodate up to 8). I recommend a smaller team size, and that everyone’s reputation be set to the lowest setting of villainous. Once this is done you will need to visit the Trial Contact in Nerva Archipelago. Travel to the Crimson Cove area (on the southern half of the map), and on its far east coast, you'll find him (if you use the /loc command in your chat box to figure out your position, you'll find him at -1258, 11, 6411). He is a Circle of Thorns (CoT) Daemon Lord named Sparcetriel, and is standing at the end of a pier. The trial itself consists of three missions in all:

First Mission: Defeat 25 CoT (street mission)
Now, the nearest Thorns are all level 32+, and probably aren't the best choice for this, but the mission can easily and quickly be accomplished by going to the Cap Au Diable zone instead. When you get there go to the northwestern area of the map and kill accordingly. Their levels will be below yours so you may not get any experience points (xp), but you will finish it really fast, so you can move on to the next mission.

Be aware that from this point on, all enemy spawns will be set to +2/+3 of the level of the highest member of the party.

Second Mission: Defeat Heroes (door mission, enemy encountered are Wyvern & Longbow)
This under water mission is located in Nerva with the door being the top hatch of a submarine. Your mission is to defeat 3 Elite Bosses - one Longbow, one Wyvern, and one Legacy Chain. Be careful not to run around upon entering the mission because the first room will contain a Wyvern Elite Boss with explosive arrows and many companions (remember FrostFire the troll from City of Heroes?). Take out the group of Longbows first on the opposite end of the platform then work your way to the upper deck with the Elite Boss group. Once done with that group the mission is not any different from any other mission. You will have to kill two more Elite Bosses with one found about halfway through the mission and the last one at the end.

Final Mission: Defeat Thorn Tree (door mission, enemy encountered is CoT)
This mission is also located in Nerva at the northeastern area of the map, and is infested with Level 35+ CoT. Be very careful in your approach run, or you'll have to go right across the zone again from hospital. In the beginning, the mission is typical of CoT missions with narrow temple passage ways, large open caves, water falls, stargate-like portals, and mage bosses galore. You will simply need to work you way through the mission exercising typical CoT caution strategies. Once you make your way to the end of the mission you will be in a huge cavern with a gigantic thorn tree in the center of the room. IMPORTANT: DO NOT go towards the tree at this point because the tree is an Arch-Villain that shoots poisonous thorns (one shot kills). Your mission display will say to defeat vines; however, the room is full of CoT groups. You will need to work around the outside perimeter of the room clearing these groups with HellFrost bosses first before anything else. Now that the room is cleared, very carefully assemble the team near the front edge of the tree but not too close or in line of sight with the tree. Your team must work very quickly in a clock-wise sweep of the entire room to clear 40 vines or more because the vines will respawn. Killing the vines will weaken the Thorn Tree enough to engage. Everyone must attack the tree in full force, there will be some vines directly in front of tree so take them out as well. You will start to notice vines appearing while the team is attacking the tree. Send one of the stronger team members to tackle the vines while everyone else stays at the tree. With any luck your team will kill the tree before the CoT ambush happens, which will spawn when the tree hits half health. Otherwise be prepared to disengage the tree to handle the ambush. By the time the ambush is destroyed the vines will have re-spawned with the tree regaining both life and strength. Repeat the vine clearing process over again then attack.

The first team I was on had four members and it took us five attempts at the tree before we successfully completed the trial. With the second team we killed the tree in only three attempts at the tree since we knew what to do. You and your team will probably die a few times or more during the course of the trial so don't get too discouraged about that, it's part of the game. The good news is that you will earn a ton of xp anyway and get to fix your character’s shortcomings. To perform the respec itself go see the contact standing next to the trainer in Nerva. Good Luck.

Special thanks go out to dreamtwister for providing additional material for this guide.

To preface, I did this trial with a four man team.

27lvl brute
27lvl brute
29lvl MM
26lvl corrupter(Me)

The spawns were never more than lvl 30.

Other than some ocassional death, there was no real problem until we got to the vines. For some reason, only one of us had the counter that shows how many vines are left. He reports that once we got the vines down to one, it would jump back to 5 and then 9, and so on and so forth, ad nauseum.

I believe we just didn't have the fire power for that last push. So we ended up going around the tree and damaging all the vines, then killing them. This finally worked (after much death). Then the counter dissappeared. However the vines continued to regrow.

We just cleared the vines infront of the AV (eventually not even that) and had the Master Mind send in his bots and wear it down. Out of boredom the two brutes ran around clearing vines while the MM's bots did their thing. This "seemed" to have no effect on the AV. The corruptor just shielded the bots

We had a total of four ambushes, with two waves each. I think they are something that comes at regular intervals. The longer it takes you to kill the AV, the more ambushes you have.

I have to say, when doing this trial, give consideration to how much damage output you have on your team. This was a big problem for us, with only one corrupter. Also, expect to be one-shotted, or nearly so, by the AV in odd moments and places. So having some one that can rez/heal without needing enemy mobs is nice. Holds where nice when it came to the vines, they also packed a considerable punch.

Not having the firepower, it took us two hours for just the vines/AV part of the respec. A lot of it spent running back from the hospital or waiting for others to do so.

Hope this helps

2nd mission. We ran in, i stealthed to the elite bosses, TP'd the other members of the TF killed them. Beware the spine boss, if you're stealthed and get too close, say hello to some debt because you'll be visible. It could have taken us 20 mins, but i couldnt find the last elite... that's because there wasn't one for us. the last boss was a regular boss. Luckily it said his name on the nav so we evenutally found him.

Just a heads up if u guys run into the same problem finding someone.

Heya - just wanted to mention that you should probably mention in your guide that when you go into the 3rd mission, someone on the team should have a 'vine counter' displayed in their navagation bar.

This will tell you exactly how many vines you have to kill before being able to even attack the tree. We didn't know to look for a counter when we attempted tonight, and kinda ended up all willy-nilly because we didn't know what to do after cleaning all the vines out around the tree twice and still not being able to attack AV.

If we had known that a counter was needed to know when to hit AV, we probably would have met with better success. Otherwise, i found the guide very useful :) Thanks for taking the time to summarize it for us others.

I wish I had read your helpful guide BEFORE I ended up on a completely clueless group who invited me to do this trial.

I got a blind invite (which should have tipped me off) and even though I said I wanted to log off in less than 1/2 hour, the group leader promised me the respec 'wouldn't take long'

He basically lied to me saying they were halfway through it and I could still join as a SK and they would be finished quickly enough.
I'd never done a respec before so I didn't know any better.

Reading your guide I now realize I did the WHOLE trial though that was kind of obvious after it took 2-3 hours.

By the time I realized an hour had passed I decided to stick with it but I was not happy with the person who invited me.

They also attempted something odd where they had me SK-ed and get the mish. At the tree entrance, they all logged out with instructions that I was supposed to enter the mish and they would log back in.

Now I realize they must have been trying some kind of exploit to lower the mission level, but it didn't work lol.

They were TOTALLY clueless about how to kill the Tree AV. Following the orders of the lame-### leader, I got to spend FOURTY-FIVE, mind-numbing minutes endlessly killing vines with a poor Brute while the rest of the group left us ALONE in that final room while they went out (with the leader) to regroup after a couple died.

When they finally came back, we were able to wipe out the vines and finish the mission. I was pretty ticked off by now since I figured out I had been deceived, but it all worked out in the end.

It turned out the leader was SO CLUELESS he never realized you CAN'T GET MORE RESPECS BY RUNNING THE TRIAL OVER!!! At least not until you gain more levels. So all that time and he got squat out of the trial! :)

Just goes to show what goes around comes around LOL :) :)

Oh, I wanted to add that I was the one who had the vine counter and my character was the one who got the mission.

Perhaps the person who talks to the demon in the first place gets the vine counter?

i7 News - 3rd Respec contact Found!  dreamtwister on 05/08/06 09:03

Last couple times I did the respec our team completely logged off (don't quit) beforing entering the door mission sexcept for the lowest lvl member. The lowest lvl member would then go into the mission. We all stayed off-line for five minutes or so then logged back on. The result was an extremely easy and fast mission.
