Welcome to Aurrius' guide to the Energy Melee/Electric Armour Brute!
This is my third guide. I’ve also done a Broadsword/Regeneration and Claws/Regeneration Scrapper guide.
I will rate all powers from each power set from 1 to 5 and give an explanation of them, dive into the power pools, the ancillary pools and last but not least I’ll give you the build that I am currently using on my (currently) level 44 Brute Thundercharge, on the EU Union server.
Note: The slotting in the build provided on the end of this guide is by no means the actual slotting order, I just prefer that order in my builder so that things aren’t as chaotic. ‘Damage, damage, damage, accuracy, accuracy, recharge’ looks a bit easier to me than ‘accuracy, damage, accuracy, damage, damage, recharge’. But that’s just me.
Whatever is said in this guide is based on my opinions and experiences with these power sets. It’s my opinion. Feel free to start whining, but I don’t give a damn.
Introduction to the power sets
Energy Melee is the primary power set in this guide. Energy Melee has high endurance costs, high recharge and its attacks deal very high damage. Both Total Focus and Energy Transfer deal extreme damage, which is extremely awesome, to say the least. All of Energy Melee’s attacks have a secondary effect, which is a chance to stun. Get a bit of recharge and you can stunlock an Elite Boss.
Electric Armour is the secondary power set in this guide. Electric Armour is a resistance set, which means that it’ll reduce the damage you’d normally take, in the form of three damage resistance shields. For the rest, Electric Armour includes a PBAoE damage/taunt toggle, godmode power, two endurance management powers, mez protection and the every-so-lovely Lightning Reflexes.
Energy Melee
Barrage
Type: Click
Available: Level 1
Effect: Melee Minor damage (Smashing/Energy), foe disorient
Endurance cost: 3,54
Recharge: 2,0 seconds
Debion: Low cost, low recharge, low damage. Great power for quickly building up Fury. Cycle this with Energy Punch and Brawl and your Fury will build in seconds.
Recommended slotting: 3xDamage, 2xAccuracy, 1xEndurance Reduction
Overall rating: 3
Energy Punch
Type: Click
Available: Level 1
Effect: Melee Moderate damage (Smashing/Energy), foe disorient
Endurance cost: 5,2
Recharge: 4,0 seconds
Debion: If you choose to grab this, it’ll be one of your main attacks. Quick, low cost, and reasonable damage. Good power.
Recommended slotting: 3xDamage, 2xAccuracy, 1xEndurance Reduction
Overall rating: 4
Bone Smasher
Type: Click
Available: Level 2
Effect: Melee high damage (Smashing/Energy), foe disorient
Endurance cost: 8,53
Recharge: 6,0 seconds
Debion: Great power. Plain awesome. High damage, greater stun chance than Barrage or Energy Punch, quick animation. This’ll be one of the best attacks you’ll get. Also, the animation is brilliant!
Recommended slotting: 3xDamage, 2xAccuracy, 1xRecharge Reduction
Overall rating: 5
Build Up
Type: Click
Available: Level 6
Effect: Self +80% damage, +20% ToHit
Endurance cost: 5,2
Recharge: 90 seconds
Duration: 10 seconds
Debion: Just like all Build Ups. Not mandatory if your Fury-building ability is good, but it’s still handy.
Recommended slotting: 3xRecharge Reduction
Overall rating: 3
Whirling Hands
Type: Click
Available: Level 8
Effect: PBAoE moderate damage (Smashing/Energy), foe disorient
Endurance cost: 13
Recharge: 14,0 seconds
Debion: Personally, I think this power is worthless. I find Energy Melee great for single target carnage, but any AoE power is a wasted power slot. I’d rather pick up Energy Punch. Also, the radius is sooooo small. Don’t take it. Seriously.
Recommended slotting: 3xDamage, 2xAccuracy, 1xEndurance/Recharge Reduction
Overall rating: 2
Taunt
Type: Click
Available: Level 12
Effect: Targeted AoE, foe taunt
Endurance cost: --
Recharge: 10,0 seconds
Duration: 41 seconds
Debion: A standard taunt. That’s all, really.
Recommended slotting: 1xAccuracy
Overall rating: 2
Total Focus
Type: Click
Available: Level 18
Effect: Melee extreme damage (Smashing/Energy), foe disorient
Endurance cost: 18,5
Recharge: 20,0 seconds
Debion: Oh yes. Now the fun begins. Total Focus deals extreme damage, and is the second best power you’ll get. Total Focus has a long animation and a very high endurance cost, but it makes up for it with higher base accuracy, 100% chance to stun (mag 4 instead of the other attacks’ mag 3) and extreme damage. This power will finally enable you to easily oneshot your opponents. The animation is nice as well. You jump up (quite slowly though) and smash your opponent’s head. Hehe.
Recommended slotting: 3xDamage, 2xAccuracy, 1xEndurance Reduction
Overall rating: 5
Stun
Type: Click
Available: Level 26
Effect: Melee, foe disorient
Endurance cost: 10,2
Recharge: 20,0 seconds
Duration: 11,9 seconds
Debion: Seems like a decent stun (but only mag 3, so only use it on Lieutenants and Minions) but personally, I find the stuns from your attacks enough to keep the enemies disoriented.
Recommended slotting: 1xStun Duration, 2xAccuracy, 3xRecharge Reduction
Overall rating: 1
Energy Transfer
Type: Click
Available: Level 32
Effect: Melee extreme damage (Smashing/Energy), foe disorient, self -HP
Endurance cost: 10,2
Recharge: 20,0 seconds
Debion: Finally. You’re level 32. You get Energy Transfer. More extreme damage, and again, a higher base accuracy, just like Total Focus. Only this time, you don’t get the high endurance cost and the long animation disadvantages. This time, you lose a portion of health when you use it. Now I know that sounds worrying, but it really isn’t. Your resistances combined with Aid Self and the fact that the HP loss is only minor makes it very bearable. Use this power as much as possible, because it can easily oneshot Minions and Lieutenants (with some Fury and maybe Build Up)! This’ll be your very best attack ever, and I’ll personally slap you to death with a teaspoon if you don’t take it.
Recommended slotting: 3xDamage, 2xAccuracy, 1xRecharge Reduction
Overall rating: 5
Electric Armour
Charged Armour
Type: Toggle
Available: Level 1
Effect: +Resistance(Smashing, Lethal, Energy)
Endurance Cost: 0,26EPS
Recharge: 2,0 seconds
Debion: You have no choice but to take this. It’s your most important shield, as it gives you (when triple slotted for Resistance) 41% resistance against the three most common types of damage in the game.
Recommended slotting: 1-2xEndurance Reduction, 3xResistance
Overall rating: 4
Lightning Field
Type: Toggle
Available: Level 2
Effect: PBAoE toggle, minor DoT (Energy), foe -end
Endurance Cost: 0,52EPS
Recharge: 10,0 seconds
Duration: 13,5 seconds
Debion: Your PBAoE damage/taunt toggle. I personally found it no use, because I’m not a tank, but if you tank a lot, take it so that you can grab the aggro! It’s pretty heavy on the endurance, so I recommend slotting it for endurance reduction before anything else.
Recommended slotting: 3xEndurance Reduction, 2xDamage, 1xAccuracy
Overall rating: 2
Conductive Shield
Type: Toggle
Available: Level 4
Effect: +Resistance(Fire, Cold, Energy, Negative)
Endurance Cost: 0,26EPS
Recharge: 2,0 seconds
Debion: Your second resistance toggle, and this one gives you resistance to three new types of damage, and more resistance to Energy. Conductive Shield + Charged Armour will bring you close to the energy resistance cap!
Recommended slotting: 1-2xEndurance Reduction, 3xResistance
Overall rating: 3
Static Shield
Type: Toggle
Available: Level 10
Effect: +Resistance(Hold, Sleep, Disorient, Endurance Drain, Recovery DeBuff, Teleportation, Psionic)
Endurance Cost: 0,2EPS
Recharge: 4,0 seconds
Debion: Not only does it give resistance to Psionic damage (which is quite common at level 40+), this is also your mez-protection toggle. Static Shield will give you about mag -10 protection to before-mentioned effects. Take it!
Recommended slotting: 1-2xEndurance Reduction, 3xResistance
Overall rating: 4
Grounded
Type: Auto
Available: Level 16
Effect: +Resistance(Energy, Negative, Endurance Drain, Immobilize, Knockback)
Endurance Cost: --
Recharge: --
Debion: Your knockback and immobilize protection power. It seems awesome, to have those protections in an auto power, but be warned! It only works when you’re close to the ground, so if you jump and somebody knocks you back, you really are thrown back. Also, this gives you some resistance to Energy and Negative Energy damage, which will bring your Energy resistance to the cap (90%) when combined with Charged Armour and Conductive Shield.
Recommended slotting: 1-3xResistance
Overall rating: 4
Lightning Reflexes
Type: Auto
Available: Level 20
Effect: +Recharge, +Speed, Resistance(Slow)
Endurance Cost: --
Recharge: --
Debion: This auto power is basically the same as Swift from the Fitness power pool, with an added effect of +20% Recharge. That +Recharge is why you should take this. Take it and love it!
Recommended slotting: 1-3xRun Speed/Fly Speed
Overall rating: 4
Conserve Power
Type: Click
Available: Level 28
Effect: Endurance discount
Endurance Cost: 7,8
Recharge: 600 seconds
Duration: 90 seconds
Debion: This is your first endurance management power. It makes all your powers (including your toggles) only use half the endurance they would normally for 90 seconds. Use it when endurance is an issue, or in a prolonged fight. I took it at level 28 and then respecced it out at level 37, because I already had a six-slotted Power Sink by then.
Recommended slotting: 3xRecharge
Overall rating: 3
Power Sink
Type: Click
Available: Level 35
Effect: PBAoE, +Endurance, foe -Endurance
Endurance Cost: 13
Recharge: 60 seconds
Debion: One of the best powers Electric Armour gets, and the solution to all your endurance issues. Power Sink drains (when unslotted) 40 endurance from all enemies close to you, debuffs their recovery for 100%, and gives you 25 endurance for every enemy you hit with it. Also, Power Sink is auto-hit. With its really short recharge of only 60 seconds (unslotted), you will almost never run out of endurance again. Now you can finally return the favour to those bloody Malta Sappers!
Recommended slotting: 3xEndurance Modification, 3xRecharge Reduction
Overall rating: 5
Power Surge
Type: Click
Available: Level 38
Effect: +Resistance(All damage but psionics), +Recovery, +Resistance(Knockback/up/down, Repel, Disorient, Hold, Sleep, Immobilize), PBAoE foe hold
Endurance Cost: 2,6
Recharge: 1000 seconds
Duration: 180 seconds
Debion: Yes! Finally! Your godmode power! Power Surge gives you increased resistance to damage and mez effects, and increased recovery to withstand punishment you normally couldn’t take. For that part, Power Surge is just the same as other godmodes, and it will drain you of HP and Endurance when the effect wears off, after three minutes. However, when it wears off, you will (according to the debion, but it isn’t entirely correct) explode in a massive EMP pulse, attempting to hold the enemies around you with a measly mag 1 PBAoE hold. Animation is quite nice though. You get to look like Deathsurge’s mini-me, and when it wears off you’re all smokey!
Recommended slotting: 2-3xResistance, 3xRecharge Reduction
Overall rating: 5
Power pools
Don’t worry, these are just my opinions. If you like a pool that I don’t, feel free to take it by any means.
Concealment
Although it can be nice to be able to stealth allies, or be stealthed yourself, I personally don’t like it and I don’t recommend it. To quote FireKitty: ‘you’re a Brute, don’t be such a wuss!’
Fighting
Boxing is a nice, quick power for your attack chain. Good replacement for Brawl or Barrage once it’s slotted. Kick is worthless. Tough will increase your resistance to smashing/lethal damage, and it stacks nicely with Charged Armour. Weave would’ve been nice if it wasn’t for the fact that you don’t have any other defence powers to stack it with.
Fitness
Recommended for any build. The +Recovery is almost necessary to cope with all your toggles, and Health is always good for extra survivability. Swift and Hurdle are still meh, but fun.
Flight
Me likey, but slow. Air Superiority is nice but Hover and Group Fly aren’t that good for Brutes. Take Fly if you want to as your travel power.
Leadership
Can be useful for both PvE and PvP, with some extra damage (nice for allies), accuracy and perception. Don’t bother picking up Maneuvers or Vengeance, unless you do the Lord Recluse’s Task Force each day and people die a lot.
Leaping
Very nice travel power, and Combat Jumping gives you a little defence and a bit of extra jumping height/speed. Jump Kick isn’t worth a thing, and Acrobatics is handy if you don’t have knockback protection (basically, if you have Dark Armour or Fiery Aura).
Medicine
The only self-heal you’ll ever get as an Energy Melee/Electric Armour Brute. This has increased my survivability a lot, and I love it. Slot it for 3xHealing, 2xInterrupt Reduction, 1xRecharge Reduction. Also, Aid Other has saved many, many of my allies!
Presence
The first two powers are rather useless, a taunt and an AoE taunt, but if you really want to taunt, your primary already has one. Now, the third and fourth powers are the good ones. A single target fear and an AoE fear. Nine out of ten people don’t have resistance to fear, and neither do NPC’s. Intimidate or Invoke Panic can be handy, especially for PvP, though you will have to sacrifice a lot of power slots in order to grab them. Not worth it if you ask me!
Speed
Super Speed is a decent travel power, very fast, though the lack of height bothers me. Hasten is a nice addition to all power set combinations, though I personally think that /Electric Armour doesn’t need it, because it already has auto +20% Recharge.
Teleportation
Very fast, though a direct pain in the arse with lag. Recall Friend is very team-friendly. Teleport Foe can be handy for pulling, and Team Teleport is just… well, a waste of a power slot.
Ancillary pools
Basically, all Patron Power Pools are the same. They all have the same (attack, AoE/cone immob, AoE attack and pet) powers, they just look differently. Personally, I think you shouldn’t take any of them, but it’s your own choice of course.
Sample build
These are the builds that Thundercharge has used/uses/will use.
First build is the build I used until level 37.
Then I respecced to the second build, and I’m still using it now.
The third build is the IO build I want, eventually. I already have a few sets… but some are just so expensive!
