Well as promised, here is the first installment of Secondary Tactics, Traps.
First the basics, what they are.
Green = Get it Red = Don’t Get
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Web Grenade = Great immobilizer, will help more then you think.
Caltrops = Slows and causes damage keeps ranged pets from being hit by melee enemies.
Triage Beacon = This is your battle field, people will love you for this.
Acid Mortar = Some nice de buffs, draws aggression from you.
Force Field Generator = Get it and you will get hit A LOT less often.
Poison Trap = Holds and de buffs and other goodies.
Seeker Drones = Worthless for any mastermind, especially the robots since they already get them for free. Skip it.
Trip Mine = Love it, use often, this could replace any attack power.
Detonator = A super Embalmed Cadaver Explosion. Get recharge reductions.
The tactics mentioned below are mostly mine and friends opinions on these tactics. This guide doesn’t have every tactic since every move can be tactical. These are just some of my main, best working tactics.
Levels 1-9 Tactics
Enemy Capture Works for all pets
Requires: Web grenade
Issue 7 caused many problems for the MM. The new programming made many enemies decide to run away when the going gets tough. By them running they usually run through another group and then the pets agro another group. This tactic counters that. This tactic is hard to list so ill just describe. Ill describe it as a lieutenant by itself. After your pets are all summoned and upgraded, look at the target you have spotted. Now use this little bonus.
1. Hold control and click on your holding power “web grenade”
2. You should now see a green circle around it
3. Now when the power is recharged it will automatically activate
Now, have your pets attack this lieutenant. Approach him/her and just keep using the capture power. By doing this the enemy won’t be able to run away. This won’t
Door Trap
Works for all pets
Requires: Caltrops
This tactic is best used in mayhem missions when pesky LB follow you into the bank.
1. Run in bank, back away from door
2. Summon pets quickly “don’t upgrade them…yet”
3. Place caltrops in front of door
4. Arrange pets in back of the caltrops in a semicircle
5. Steps 1-5 if done well should be completed in 10-20 seconds
6. Upgrade the pets “by now the LB should have entered the bank”
7. Tell pets to attack the strongest enemy “keep upgrading them”
8. The LB should be slowed considerably by the trap
9. Now watch them try to run away…but you know they can’t
This tactic can also be used in hallways and just pull. There is an even better version at lvl 35.
BOOM Safety
Works for all pets
Requires: Nothing special
This tactic is used when you are facing an enemy with an AoE attack such as grenades or fire bombs. Just make sure your pets are spread out so all of them don’t get hit by the attack. Simple but a lot of people just don’t do it.
The Battlefield
Works for all pets
Requires : Triage Beacon
Caltrops(bonus)
This is one of a trap mastermind’s best tactics available. The triage beacon could be confused with a healing power but it is really an increase regeneration power. Setting it up when your pets are dieing WON”T help you. However setting it up as a battlefield is what helps. If you combat within the beacons radius, all of your pets, teammates, and even yourself get a huge bonus in regeneration, making it much harder for your pets to die. Coupled with caltrops, you can have your battle field cause damage to your enemies and regenerate your pets.
Levels 10-20
Mortar Armor
Works well for all pets except zombies.
Requires : Acid Mortar
Acid Mortar is usefull for two main reasons
Its De Buffs help A LOT
It will draw aggression to itself
The Mortar can almost be in a figuratively, an armor protecting you from getting hit if you set it up correctly.
1. Summon and Upgrade Pets
2. Summon mortar in front of pets, near enemies
3. If you let it attack first it will draw the aggression from you.
Its Hammer Time!Works for all pets
Requires: Force Field Generator (FFG)
Maneuvers (bonus) Weave (Bonus)
This tactic is named “Its Hammer Time!” because you will be singing MC Hammer when you are barely getting hit. Enemies will have a hard time hitting you with both of these on. However, this does not make you a Force Field Mastermind. Do expect to be hit sometimes. This can work well without
maneuvers as well.
Poison Trap is a tricky power, it mostly helps other powers. If you just use it as a hold power, you will be Gold!
Levels 21-38
Seeker Drones
Doesn’t work well for any pets
Requires: If you get it, you to respec it out, nothing more then that. (Opinion)
Three Trip Mine Tactics
1. Place and Run!
Don’t Need Pets for this.
Requires: Trip Mine
This first tactic will help you get through mobs a lot quicker.
1. Things that could help: Superspeed, Invisibility, Stealth, Phase Shift, Swift.
2. Run into the middle of the mob “if you have an invis power or SS”. Front of the mob if you don’t have any of them.
3. Set the trip mine and run.
4. BOOM!
2. Multiple BOOMS!
Don’t Need Pets for this.
Requires: Trip Mine and Poison Trap
1. Run into mob and quickly place a poison trap in the midst of them.
2. While they are held by the poison trap place a trip mine
3. If they are still held place another.
4. Many BOOMS!
If you have three SO recharge reductions this trip mine should recharge in about nine seconds, it pretty much becomes your attack power LOL. Three Recharge SOs on Poison Trap it will take about twenty-five seconds to recharge, giving you enough time to place another. As before, Superspeed, Invisibility ext will boost the effectiveness of a power. Remember you are not a brute, don’t run into a group of enemies like one without knowing what will happen and the damage you might take.
3. The Trap Pit
Works for all Pets
This power doesn’t require anything in specific, however works best with, multiple trip mines, caltrops, a poison trap, acid mortar, and you NEED Teleport Foe.
1. Position yourself a medium distance away from an enemy.
2. Summon +upgrade your pets.
3. Place trip mines in a close area (even on top of each other.)
4. Place a poison trap in the middle/on top of them as well.
5. Have pets surround the traps in aggressive mode (best to use goto and stay)
6. Place an acid mortar about 1 meter away.
7. Throw caltrops in the middle of the pet circle.
8. Target your lieutenant or boss (minion are a waste of time for this.)
9. If needed use an inspiration increasing your accuracy and/or have tactics on.
10. Teleport this foe into the middle.
11. Caution, this causes bright lights, bangs, and the fall of an enemy’s body.
I have taken out numerous bosses with this strategy. As a level forty-three, I used this tactic on Calysix the Shaper in the “Gain essence of the leviathan” mission. He was an Arch Villain, and with 5 trip mines, 2 poison traps, caltrops and mercenaries, I teleported him into the trap and he died within five seconds.
Bomb Voyage!
Works for all pets
Works best with Robots and Zombies
Requires: Detonator and Grant Invisibility
Imagine setting off a bomb in the middle of a group of enemies; however they notice it and run away or try to kill the person with it. Now imagine a completely invisible person with a bomb who walks into a crowd of hostiles. No one notices anything then BOOM. This is pretty much the effect of this tactic.
1. Attach bomb to strongest pet “Assault Bot” “Commando” ext
2. Then invis- them
3. Use “goto” and have the pet walk in the middle of a group of enemies.
4. Then set it
5. BOOM
That’s it LOL, works well with destroying an MM’s pets in PvP as well.
Good Power Pool Choices and Why
Ratings:
Blue = 10/10, Get it!
Green 8/10, Could work very well!
White 5/10, Good.
Not all of the power pools are mentioned here and some of the powers are not either, these absent powers don’t work well with traps.
Stealth = Control pets while hidden from a distance; you can place traps this way.
Grant Invisibility = Hides your pets enabling stealth tactics and bonus to defense.
Invisibility = Ghost through your missions and then summon pets and traps out of invisibility (you are restricted to powers that directly effect yourself)
Phase Shift = If you are in a real problem, pop a luck into your villain and activate this, you will be completely intangible once it activates (activation time is slow.)
Tough = Allows you to be able to take more damage without loosing health; however you need another fighting power before this.
Weave = Makes you a lot harder to hit, you need two more fighting powers before you can get this.
Health = Increases your regeneration rate; you need another fitness power before choosing this.
Hover = Great for floating over the battlefield without having to use a lot of endurance.
Fly = Faster floating, and good use for trap powers; dive bombing people is priceless.
Get all of the Leadership powers except Vengeance. They will really boost the effectiveness of your pets.
Get all the Healing powers except Resuscitate. This will help keeps your pets, yourself, and even some of your traps alive.
Hasten = increases the recharge of your pet summons and your traps for a short time, enabling you to place more, faster.
Superspeed = Running up placing traps and running back can do a lot of good . . . err . . . bad.
Recall Friend = Good for getting all your pets together and you can also teleport your traps!
Teleport Foe = Teleport enemies into traps.
Teleport = Teleport to a place, set a trap, teleport back. The hostiles won’t know what hit them.
For a traps mastermind I don’t suggest getting any patron power except for the shield, if that is possible.
If you have any cool tactics you would like to share, send me a tell @agenthunk “my global name” or post it in a comment. I’ll be sure to give you the credit you deserve. The next installment for Mastermind Tactics I’ll be going over the Dark Miasma Power set.
