Welcome to my guide to the Thugs/Force Field Masterminds. First off, I just want to let you know (like all of my guides), I won't be telling you about the odd levels (slotting), so I will just be telling you what types of enhancements to use on your powers.
Level 1: Call Thugs and Force Bolt
Call Thugs: 3 dam, 3 acc
Force Bolt: 3 acc, 2 knockback, 1 recharge
Thugs may be pretty weak with just pistols and brawl in their early levels, but once they have the upgrades, they're kicking total @$$.
Force Bolt: This is without doubt one of the funnest (and funniest) powers in the Force Field set. It's great, since it's a wonderful way to keep the bosses unable to attack while your pets destroy them. They get knocked back and take their time getting up, only to be hit with another knockback. This is a 5/5 star power.
Level 2: Dual Wield
2 dam, 2 acc
Dual Wield is a nice damage attack. It also has a nice animation...but that's not why you're getting the power. With just 2 acc, it rarely misses, and with 2 damage it does a suprising amount of damage for a Mastermind damage power.
Level 4: Deflection Shield
3 defence, 1 recharge, 1 endurance
Yep, you picked Force Field, so you better expect to get the bubbles. These make your pets quite resistant to smashing and lethal damage, which is extremely common in the beginning and ending of the game.
Level 6: Equip Thug
3 rech, 3 end
Ah yes, the first upgrade. Great when you first get it because it gives your lesser thugs Dual Wield, which will help you take out your enemies much faster. Take this power the moment it is available, don't put if off until a later level.
Level 8: Swift
1 runspeed
Swift will help you get around faster (which is great since you have no travel power yet). The main reason we're taking this however is because we're building up to Stamina.
Level 10: Hover
1 defence
Hover is building up to your travel power (fly). I mainly picked hover instead of Air Superiority because you're an MM...not a stalker or brute. You don't "do" melee. The defence on hover isn't great, but it's something.
Level 12: Enforcers
3 dam, 3 acc
Enforcers! Your Lieutenant pets. These guys are great, especially because they come along with Leadership (like Assault and Tactics). Their Uzi attacks also do a nice bit of damage. Plus, they have one of the best entrances...entering through a manhole.
Level 14: Fly
3 flyspeed, 1 end
Your travel power of course. Now here's the one thing you guys can feel free to change. You don't NEED the 1 extra endurance slot on it, but I always found it nice to have. So it's totally up to you if you want to throw it on there.
Level 16: Personal Force Field
3 recharge, 3 defence
This is probably the best power in the Force Field set. It's great since you can send your pets after the bad guy, and protect your self from any harm. The bubble makes you ALMOST impossible to hit (however the higher level the enemy you're facing, the better chance they have to get through the force field). There is one big letdown though. You cannot control your pets from inside it. I still think this is a small price to pay for it nonetheless. It's a great power.
Level 18: Health
1 heal
It's pretty nice to have since it will help you regenerate faster when you're hiding in your Personal Force Field...but once again, the real reason is Stamina
Level 20: Stamina!
3 endredux
Stamina will help you a ton. With all the pet upgrades and bubbling, you'll need the endurance. It will also help you a lot when it comes to fly.
Level 22: Dispertion Bubble
3 defence
Dispertion Bubble is a great power. It gives you resistance to Holds, Immobilizes, Disorients, and +Defence to everything. The best thing is that it's a PBAoE so it affects everyone around you (pets AND team).
Level 24: Insulation Shield
1 rech, 1 end, 3 def
Well this would be nice to take early on, but you'll need all the powers earlier mentioned even worse. It's another shield that gives your pets or team (whoever you're bubbling) resistance to Fire, Cold, Energy, Negative Energy, and Endurance Drain.
Level 26: Bruiser
3 dam, 3 acc
Yes the Bruiser! The best power in the Thugs set. This guy is identical to the Super Strength brute set, with the powers Jab, Punch, Hand Clap, Haymaker, Knockout Blow, Hurl, and Foot Stomp (depending on what you upgrade him with). His attacks do INSANE damage with 3 damage enhancements on him, and he can take a serious punch. Many people say that having a melee pet is bad since your other pets are ranged. I totally disagree. It's like having a brute on your team to hold the agro for you. Sure...he doesn't specialize in defence and could never replace a real brute, but he does a good job on holding agro. If I had to say one problem with him, it would be that he often just hangs back and throws boulders at your enemies, when his main damage attacks like Knockout Blow and Haymaker are melee. You'll have to be using the "go to" command with him a lot. Oh and he rides in a motorcycle which is just so freaking awesome.
Level 28: Gang War
3 rech
Gang War. Hmmm...many say this is a horrible power. I think it's great actually. I usually send them in on a boss and the boss wastes all his attacks killing my weak little gang. As mentioned in the forums earlier though, is that if the Boss, Elite Boss, or Archvillain has a cone attack or any other attack that affects more than one person...you're screwed. They'll come crashing down. But actually, that's not such a bad thing. Usually their damage attacks that affect more than one player usually do tons of damage, meaning that they just wasted one of their best powers.
Level 30: Aid Other
3 heal, 2 recharge
This will save your pets lives soooo many times...but that's not the reason I took it. Like Swift and Health, I was building up to Aid Self, which will be described later...
Level 32: Upgrade Equipment
3 recharge,3 endurance
This is your final upgrade...the one that gives your pets some of their most strongest attacks, like the arsonist Fire Bomb, and the Bruiser Knockout Blow.
Level 35: Aid Self
3 heal, 1 recharge, 2 interrupt reductions
Aid Self is a great power combined with PFF (Personal Force Field). Whenever it gets ugly and my pets all die, I put up the Personal Force Field and give myself a heal. "Well if you're only using it in PFF, why do you need interrupt reduction enhancements?" Well you're not always going to use it in the bubble. It's always good to just run behind your pets and patch yourself up. This is a must have if you get Personal Force Field.
Level 38: Force Bubble
1 recharge, 3 knockback
This is a HILARIOUS power. It's just like Dispertion Bubble (going over you, your pets, and your team), but instead of giving you resistance, it knocks back anyone who comes within the bubble. It's great to get away mobs who are crowding you, and also pretty handy when you're running away from a battle like a little wussy.
REASONS FOR THE POWERS I DIDN'T PICK
Pistols: This is a pretty weak power, and you'll only need one damage power being an MM. That's why I picked Dual Wield instead
Empty Clips: This is a nifty cone power, but again, it's another damage attack. 1 is enough.
Detention Field: This basically makes someone intangible. You can't attack them, and they can't attack you. It can be handy at sometimes, but I say skip it. Take this power into consideration though.
Repulsion Field: You are already going to get Force Bubble, so having two repels around you is pretty useless. Plus, you shouldn't even be that close to an enemy to need to repel them like that.
Repulsion Bomb: Take this power into consideration. I didn't take it because there were more "important" powers to take. This can be very useful though, like lying it down in front of doors, so anyone who walks by will be knocked down (with a chance to be disoriented). It sounds great, but I was only half satisfied when I got it. Try getting it, and respec out of it if you don't like it.
THINK ABOUT THE FOLLOWING POWER: Group Fly: If you enjoy PvPing, group fly can be pretty useful. Now it looks great, having your pets flying up there with you, but just remember..."How is this helping you?" It may help them keep up with you, but if you get too far, they automatically spawn right next to you, so it seems pretty useless.
Hope the guide helped you out somewhat, and feel free to question of comment...Thanks!
