The plant control/thorny assault is my favourite combination for a dominator. The Plant control set comes with a wide variety of ways to dominate your enemies(via confuse, immobilize, hold, sleep, slow/snare, etc.) and like other dominator sets, comes with it's own surprises. The following is how I would personally use the partnership of the sets, so don't be freaked out if you totally disagree.
Note: I will not mention the slots.
(1)Starting out my career, I chose Stranger over Entangle(this is because you are granted the group immobilize the next level). Thorny Darts is automatically your first Thorny attack.
(2)This is where I grabbed Roots, the group immobilize. Excellent when compared to some others from the various sets due to it's fairly quick recharge time and low cost.
(4)At this level, I was leaning between Fling Thorns and Skewer. I chose Fling Thorns(moderate, cone) mainly because I did not follow the melee route. Skewer(moderate, single foe) may appeal to those who want to add a bit of melee to their build.
(6)The opportunity came to choose from the Power Pools, and I took advantage. My travel power choice was Super Jump from Leaping, so I took Combat Jumping. Now, Depending on your travel power, this is the time to decide if it is worth giving your squishy build buffs. Leaping grants you Combat Jumping(Toggle, +Def to all, +Jump), Flight grants you Hover(Toggle, +Def). Speed grants you Hasten(Reduces recharge time for 120 seconds), and Teleporation doesn't offer a self oriented buff of some sort.
(8)Next was pretty obvious; Seeds of Confusion. This is an excellent attack, a cone confusion with a fair recharge rate. I find this even more useful than Mass Confusion. I picked this over Spore Burst(Available at level 6) because I knew better from a previous respec. Spore Burst tends to be lacking a bit of accuracy, and sleep is not as useful as confusion, especially in those crazy battles. Note: Attacking an enemy that is asleep with only wake him up again.
(10) This was when I decided to start looking at the fitness set, so I grabbed Swift. Remember, you can aquire Stamina(auto: +Recovery rate) as early as level 20, so it is a good thing to consider at this time.
(12)And here comes the first little twist that the Plant Control offers; Spirit Tree. It is indeed an original keeper, a location AoE that boosts the regeneration rates of all allies nearby, and is considered a pet. Although it doesn't seem that effective earlier, slotting it will make it worth the world during the rest of your career as a villain. When a buff with cool sounds and animation comes available to a dominator, why not?
(14)It is strongly recommended that you take your travel power now, curse the dreaded need to run around. This meant Super Jump for me(peronally the best travel power available).
(16)Now, I didn't forget all about the Thorny Assault set, so now it was time for me to grab another offensive ability; Impale. An excellent addition to any toon because of it's ability to immobilize the target and seize flight, jmuping and running. It's fun to use on pvp flyers, trust me. Aim in the thorny assault set is available at this level.
(18)At this level, most powersets are able access to group holds, and this is no different. If you want a group hold, take Vines..now, and make sure to focus on recharge speed on this one.
(20) Now, because I forgot all about the Fitness set, it was time to grab Health(if you haven't done so already). Thorn Burst(PBAoE, moderate damage) from the thorny assault set is available at this level.
(22-24)This is interesting, because during level 22, I contemplated on grabbing Stamina, or another needed power pool. I went with medicine's Stimulant(aid Self is also an option, after all, it's not your job to buff), a buff for your teammates that acts like the inspiration break free. At 24, I finally took Stamina.
(26)The second twist to a plant dominator's life. The best animated ability i've seen im any dominator/conroller set is Carrion Creepers. More vicious pets to add to your collection. It is a rather unique power, and I don't know anyone who hasn't taken it. Take it at this level for sure.
(28)At this point, I didn't care what I retrieved. I was out of plant control powers to take(had to wait until 32), and I didn't want to touch any of the power pools, so I went with a thorny assault attack, Thorntrops. Now, it doesn't seem like much(works in the same way as Caltrops), but I found it to be very useful in slowly taking down an enemy when soloing, not to mention how annoying it could be in Pvp if you slot it properly(yes, I can solo as a dominator and it works).
(30)When it came to this level, I finally had room for power in the Leaping pool, Acrobatics. It's a toggle granting defence to
(32)This is when you reach the end of your Plant Control set, and doing so, you get rewarded with a pet, the Fly Trap. Compared to Jack Frost and the Fire imps, I personally find it a better pet. Good damage, a variety of ranged, melee and dominating attacks and a tolerance for a beating. I slotted it with damage and accuracy, I could care less about the recharge, because when it finally dies, the power would have been already recharged about a half hour prior.
(35)It's time for some damage. Ripper is available to you as Thorny Assault's gift. Melee, single foe high damage that lowers defence(like all other thorny attacks) and tends to knockback the target. A deadly assault.
(38)The end of the Thorny assault set comes Thorn Barrage, a single foe close range high damage attack that includes knockback and the usual defence lowering ability.
The rest is up to you to choose your patron(I'm kissing Mako's feet) and grab the accolades, so this is where I leave you. I hope this was a bit of a help, despite the fact that I didn't go into full detail about it.
